Equipment Not to Use
With few exceptions, there is no reason to use chain choke collars, shock collars, or prong collars, even though some trainers promote them. Methods that routinely use these types of equipment are not conducive to a positive relationship with your dog: they focus on pain and punishment rather than positive training. Moreover, most people do not know how to properly use these pieces of equipment and end up abusing them and causing harm to their dogs.
In most cases, shock collars and the like are simply unnecessary: if you properly train your dog, you should not need them. In rare circumstances, however, it may be necessary to use a shock collar. This should only be done by a professional trainer, and only to correct a situation that puts a dog at risk. For example, if you live in an area where you are not allowed to put up a fence, and you cannot trust your dog to stay in your yard off-leash, you may have to resort to an electric fence or an âinvisible fenceââan underground wire that, when crossed, transmits a shock to your dogâs collarâto keep your dog from running away. That being said, even if you have your dog trained for this type of fence, it is critical that you stay with your dog when he is outside. The electric fence does not keep people or animals from coming into your yard, and if your dog does manage to break through, it will discourage him from coming back afterwards. This is because whatever the dog saw that raised his adrenalin high enough for him to tolerate the shock is not there when he returns, and the dog will not be willing to take the shock again to get back into the yard.
